Samba Server to adopt GPLv3

Richard Stallman’s Free Software Foundation has finally launched the latest version of the General Public License.

The latest version is GPLv3 and it has been designed to restrict patent actions against free software.

The launch comes at a time when software giant Microsoft has claimed that Linux OS and other open source software products are infringing on their patented technologies.

One of the earliest adopters of the GPLv3 would be the Samba Server project. The project leader Jeremy Allison has stated that moving to this version is necessary as it would allow them to deal with the new threats to free software that have emerged since version 2 of the GPL.

He added that the provisions of GPLv3 “will provide greater protection for the freedoms of individual contributors. In the long term, it will provide greater incentive for them to contribute code.”

The content of the GPLv3 is available here.
