Google Desktop Search: Now on Linux!
Google has finally fulfilled their promise and have now launched the Google Desktop search application on Linux.
Google Desktop is already available on Windows and Mac OS. The company had sometime back said that they were working on a Linux version and it is out now.
Google said that the Linux version of Google Desktop would include a comprehensive indexing function. It would hunt through the full text of virtually all of a computer’s content.
This would include text, PDF, PS, source code, HTML files, email from Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org documents, Man and Info pages, folders, images, and music.
Other than that it would maintain an history of the indexed pages letting the user see content from missing/modified files.
Luckily for us, Google has made available both RPM and DEB files. This would make it easy to install for users of all the major Linux distributions.
