Microsoft’s latest Linux deal is with Linspire

Microsoft has announced that they have now signed up a deal with Linspire related to their Linux products.

The deal is essentially a Linux cross-licensing agreement and Microsoft calls it a technical collaboration with Linspire.

The companies added that their pact is to protect Linspire’s customers against Microsoft’s claims of Linux patent infringements.

The two companies added in a jointly released press statement: “Linspire will be providing its customers with the option of acquiring a patent covenant from Microsoft for customers operating the Linspire desktop.”

Microsoft claimed sometime back that as per their studies, Linux OS and some other Open Source applications infringed upon 235 of its patents. They have not given out much details on these claims however.

The deal between Linspire and Microsoft would see some software technologies being offered in their Linux products to make them more compliant in a Windows environment. One part of the deal would see Windows Live Search becoming the default internet search engine on Linspire.
