Apple: ZFS file system would get a limited support in Leopard
Sun Microsystems claimed that Apple would be making ZFS the default file system in their upcoming Leopard operating system.
However, Apple denied that claim and said that they would continue to use their existing HFS system.
The company has however now said that the upcoming Mac OS X Leopard edition would however feature limited support for the ZFS file system.
An Apple spokesperson said that the file system would be available as a read-only option from the command line.
Brian Croll, senior director of Mac OS X Product Marketing said in a statement: “ZFS is not the default file system for Leopard. We are exploring it as a file system option for high-end storage systems with really large storage. As a result, we have included ZFS — a read-only copy of ZFS — in Leopard.”
He added: “Read-only means that at a later date, if there are ZFS volumes, those systems would be able to read ZFS volumes. You cannot write data into the system. It will allow you to read ZFS volumes later.”
