RealPlayer would allow users to save YouTube and other online videos

RealNetworks has said in a statement that their upcoming RealPlayer would get a new functionality which would allow the users to download internet video from several services including Google owned YouTube.

The company said that the upcoming update would help the users store the videos for offline viewing and they would also be able to save them on a DVD.

This news comes just as Apple Inc has announced that they would soon issue an update for their Apple TV product to enable support for videos hosted on Google owned YouTube video sharing service.

RealNetworks said that with RealPlayer installed on the system, users would see a “download this video” button along with the videos hosted on several websites.

They would be able to download videos in formats including Flash, Windows Media, and QuickTime.

RealNetworks General Manager Ben Rotholtz added: “The technology we have enabled is for personal use, and that is within copyright laws. But we honor any copy protection.” Forrester analyst James McQuivey had these views: “This essentially frees up the content so that it can go anywhere you want to consume it, which means more people will consume it. That is why media companies are going to line up behind this.”
