Samba Server users being urged to patch their application
Samba Server developers are urging the users of this server application to apply the recently released patches.
The server application was found to have a critical bug which was fixed in patches released by the Samba team in the Samba 3.0.25 update.
The flaw is pretty critical as it can be remotely exploited by an attacker to run unauthorized code on the Samba server. There are no known workarounds to solve the problem.
The application ships with Linux and Unix based machines and is used by Windows clients to print and store files using a Linux or Unix machine.
Samba developer Jeremy Allison spoke on this bug: “This kind of bug is rare for us. That’s why we’re embarrassed.”
David Endler, director of security research at 3Com Corp.’s TippingPoint division had reported the flaw and he said: “The real danger here is if an exploit is developed, it could be integrated into the latest botnet software.”
