Adobe Releases Acrobat 7 with advanced security features

Adobe has released the latest version of its documentation software Acrobat. Version 7 of this portable document management tool incorporates features, which let users to assign digital rights to PDF files. This prevents unauthorized opening, printing, or exchange of sensitive documents. It uses LifeCycle Policy Server, which was introduced in February 2004 at the Demo 2004 conference.

The software would now control who can view the document. In addition, it also can lock down permissions to change, copy, print, or forward content through mailing services. The software calls upon the Policy Server when a document is accessed so permissions can be set even after the file is distributed.

The LifeCycle Policy Server is available for sale at around USD 50,000. It currently supports Windows, Red Hat Linux, IBM’s AIX, and Sun Solaris. Adobe plans to add support for Novell’s SuSE Linux and HP-UX this year. This new acrobat version comes in three avatars. Adobe has released Reader, Standard, and Professional editions, which are available from zilch to USD 499.

Other additional features in this release are ability to create PDF files from many sources. This also includes support for smart forms and collaboration on PDF files on a network. The free downloadable reader’s edition is available from Adobe website.
