Google does take software market seriously
Google is primarily known for their search engine and online advertising services. The company also has a presence in the software solutions market through their Google Apps service which currently provides a web processor and a spreadsheet tool.
The company is also scheduled to add on a presentation tool to this suite. Google has been till now denying the thought that they were seriously pursuing the mission of taking on Microsoft with their software applications primarily MS Office.
However, things are surely changing now as the company CEO Eric Schmidt has admitted in a statement that it is planning to go head-to-head with Microsoft in the software market.
He said that Google has changed its tagline and its target. Schmidt said that the new tagline will be “Search, Ads, and Apps.” Apps here would directly challenge Microsoft in their primary market of providing software products for office productivity.
Google already has a couple of online services which provides an alternative to Microsoft’s software based solutions. These are: Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk and Google Apps. They are also now supporting Gmail on BlackBerry handheld devices.
Brad Shimmin, an analyst at Current Analysis had this to say about Google’s strategy: “Business no longer select productivity applications based upon the number of preinstalled fonts or levels of ‘undo,’. Rather, they wish to choose their software based primarily upon compatibility and agility, two areas where Microsoft has fallen short in recent years.”
