Sun considering releasing OpenSolaris under GNU GPL
Sun Microsystems co-founder and Chairman Scott McNealy said in a statement that they are currently considering plans to release their OpenSolaris under the GNU GPL (general public license).
The open source version of their Solaris Operating System is currently released under the CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License), which is also approved by the Open Source Initiative.
McNealy said while talking to reporters in Bangalore, India: “There are good arguments for both, and we might do both [GPL and CDDL]. There are some folks who actually prefer CDDL over GPL.”
He added that the CDDL license allows developers, companies and even countries to develop its own intellectual property, protect it, and generate revenue from it.
He further said that they have seen nearly 8 million downloads of Solaris in the last two years, and there are 900 systems certified to run Solaris.
