Ubuntu on Dell would not ship with Wine
Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has said in a statement that the upcoming products from Dell to be powered by Ubuntu Linux operating system would not ship with WINE.
Wine project develops tools to enable Linux users run applications designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Shuttleworth said in an interview: “I do not want to position Ubuntu and Linux as a cheap alternative to Windows.”
Dell just recently announced their plans to launch some home machines which would be loaded with Ubuntu OS as thousands of people voted on their IdeaStorm website.
Shuttleworth added: “While Linux is an alternative to Windows, it is not cheap Windows. Linux has its own strengths, and users should want it because of those strengths and not because it’s a cheap copy of Windows.”
Dell has also added in another statement that their machines featuring the Ubuntu OS are likely to be cheaper compared to similar machines loaded with Windows OS as the operating system itself is available for free.
