Oracle, IBM, NEC to promote Linux based products in Japan

Tech giants Oracle, IBM and NEC are planning to form a consortium and they would be selling servers and systems running the Linux operating system in Japan.

This was revealed in a report by the Nikkei newspaper. If this is true, it would be the first time that major IT firms would be working together to market equipment running the open source operating system.

The project is being headed by Oracle and they aim to start offering their services starting June this year. They are also said to be supported by other tech giants including Hitachi, Hewlett Packard and Dell.

These companies aim to benefit from the Japanese government procurement guideline which is now promoting the use of Linux and other open source products within the government.

The Japanese government wants to decrease their reliance upon the Microsoft’s Windows operating system and other proprietary software products.
