Apple QuickTime 7.1.6 released to fix Java exploit

Apple has updated their QuickTime application to version 7.1.6. This latest release includes the fix for the exploit in QuickTime for Java which was highlighted during the recently held security conference.

The updated version has been released for both Mac and Windows platform.

Apple added that the updated version addresses numerous bug fixes and includes support for Final Cut Studio 2. It also adds timecode and closed captioning support in QuickTime Player.

The company is recommending all the users of QuickTime to update to this latest release to stay clear of the fixed bugs.

Apple added in the advisory about this updated release: “An implementation issue exists in QuickTime for Java, which may allow reading or writing out of the bounds of the allocated heap. By enticing a user to visit a web page containing a maliciously-crafted Java applet, an attacker can trigger the issue which may lead to arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional bounds checking when creating QTPointerRef objects. Credit to Dino Dai Zovi working with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative for reporting this issue.”
