Dell to offer Ubuntu preinstalled on some of their products

World’s second largest personal computer maker Dell has now confirmed that they would indeed make available some of their computer products with preinstalled Ubuntu.

Dell made this announcement in collaboration with Canonical who are the commercial sponsor of the open source program Ubuntu.

Market was already full of rumors that the company was considering picking up Ubuntu over other Linux distros for their own products.

Dell announced their enhanced support for Linux powered machines after getting massive user feedback from their IdeaStorm Web site.

Incidentally, Dell chairman and CEO Michael Dell has recently made public that he himself uses the latest version of Ubuntu, release 7.04 on one of his machines at home.

Jane Silber, director of operations at Canonical added on this new deal with Dell: “This ends the speculation. We wanted to move quickly and give a response to the reports.”

Dell spokesman Jeremy Bolen added: “The relationship with Canonical came about as part of our ongoing evaluation of distributions that customers asked for in our Linux survey. Ubuntu was the most requested [Distro] by a wide margin.”

It would be nice if there were an easy way of finding the laptops on Dell’s site that will come with Ubuntu preloaded. Vista and XP laptops are easy to find…Ubuntu laptops must be using “stealth” technology on Dell’s site.
