RIM launches Blackberry support for Windows Mobile based smartphones

Research In Motion Ltd. has announced their plans to launch software based solutions for people using Windows Mobile platform based smartphones to use their Blackberry email service solutions.

RIM said that the new software builds on the BlackBerry Connect programming are already available for the Windows Mobile platform. And these expand the service to work beyond the basic BlackBerry e-mail servers.

Customers would be able to use their other services including calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messaging.

RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie added: “I wouldn’t say it’s in response to anything from a competitive point of view. It’s driven by our desire to be the standard platform… and create the dynamic for us to grow as a standard for the carriers. We view this as highly consistent with our openness and diversity strategy.”

The company said that they would be launching this expanded service offering for Windows Mobile users sometime later this year.

Market analysts have said that looking at the potential user base of the upcoming Apple iPhone, RIM is likely to launch a software based solution for iPhone users as well.
