Adobe doubtful about platform support offered by Microsoft’s Silverlight

Microsoft has just shown their upcoming Silverlight technology which would take on the Adobe’s Flash. The company has promised that the technology would support multiple platforms.

However, Adobe’s CEO Bruce Chizen had this to say about Microsoft’s past record: “Microsoft, historically, has never demonstrated a commitment to maintaining a cross-platform solution.”

He specifically pointed towards Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer products from the company which are primarily available on the Windows OS platform.

Chizen added: “Even though they say Silverlight is going to be cross-platform, and maybe the first [version] will be, I’m not sure our customers or the people that are trying to deliver that content will have the degree of confidence that if they go with Microsoft, they’ll be able to provide them with a complete cross-platform solution forever.”

Interestingly, Adobe has been criticized by the developers around the world for lagging support for Flash on the Linux platform. This resulted in the company taking on development of the Flash 9 plug-in for the Linux platform and it is now available to public.
