Brad Smith: China improving on software piracy control

Brad Smith, senior vice president and general counsel for Microsoft has said in a statement that the company believes that the Chinese government has indeed taken good action to curb the software piracy in the region.

He said: “I think the last year has been the most important and encouraging year for software protection under the copyright law in China.”

Smith added: “We’re starting to see new PCs in China delivered to customers with legitimate software installed. That’s a very encouraging step. We’re starting to see more enterprises and government ministries purchase legitimate software. That’s an encouraging step.”

The Chinese market is said to be one of the biggest pirate of software which Microsoft claims result in massive revenue losses for them.

Business Software Alliance claims that the software companies lost $3.9 billion in the country in 2005 due to software piracy.
