Palm working on a Linux based Palm OS for future smartphones
Palm has realized that Linux is indeed the operating system which would power the next generation of communication devices.
The company is currently working on a new platform for their products which would run the Palm OS on top of a Linux kernel.
This would allow Palm to improve the performance and stability of its handhelds and smartphones. The company however has clarified that they would continue to develop and offer devices powered by the Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform.
Palm currently has products on offer including their Treo 700w (running Windows), 700p (running Palm OS) and others.
Palm CEO Ed Colligan added that they currently have no plans to license the new Linux-based platform to other handheld vendors.
