Ian Murdock is new Operating Platforms Chief for Sun Microsystems

Sun Microsystems has revealed that they have hired Ian Murdock, the lead developer of the Debian Linux project as their new chief operating platforms officer.

However, it is still not clear what this new position is for. Sun develops their own Solaris operating system. Analysts say that this position could result in a new Linux strategy for the company so that they can complement with their existing Solaris operating system platform.

Sun’s open source strategy guy, Simon Phipps said in a blog post that Murdock would be responsible for building a new strategy to evolve both Sun’s Solaris and Gnu/Linux strategies.

Murdock also happens to be the founder of the Progeny Linux Systems which is a distributor of Debian. It also supports Linux which are developed with Red Hat Package Management modules.
