Firefox 3 to bring offline support for some web applications

A lot of web users have moved on to using web based services from desktop based applications. Google Gmail is one such example.

However, one disadvantage of using online services is that if you are offline, you cannot write new mails or get access to existing ones.

Mozilla is trying to solve this problem with their underdevelopment Firefox 3 web browser. The developers are trying to add offline support for web based applications.

They already have released the second alpha version of Firefox 3.0 and are continuing working on feature sets including improved bookmark and search.

Mike Schroepfer, vice president for engineering for Mozilla added in a statement that the Firefox 3 browser release would also include elements for its 4.0 release and beyond.

He said: “What we’re trying to do with all of these things is lay the foundation.”

Firefox developers have till now added support for offline working with Zimbra, an open-source e-mail, messaging, and VoIP application. They believe that with support from Google and Microsoft, they can add similar functionality to Gmail and Microsoft’s Hotmail.
