KillProcess Review: Terminate useless processes to get the best out of your machine

No matter how powerful your system is, there’s always that one game, graphics/3D app that’ll suck up every last ounce of power it can get. Even non-demanding applications like Microsoft Word will show you a completely different side to them if you give them a highly demanding task. It is best to free up every ounce of system resource for such situations. Most users will have the good sense to close all open applications but there’s more that can be done. Windows has several processes running in the background at any given time, some of these belong to other applications and some belong to Windows itself. A lot of these processes can be safely sacrificed to get the best out of resource-critical tasks. You can kill processes one by one using the Windows Task Manager, but there’s a better way.

KillProcess is a free utility that shows you every running application and process and then lets you add any of these to a ‘Kill List’. Once you have a kill list saved all you have to do is run KillProcess and give a Terminate List command, immediately killing every process in the list and freeing up every possible resource for that demanding game/app.

KillProcess lets you make any number of kill lists, so you can have a different set of processes killed for different situations.

Tips:

  • To determine if a process can be safely killed, just look it up online. There are several good sites which give you information about system processes. ProcessLibrary is one such site.
  • It is best to restart your system once you’re done running the resource-critical task, especially if you have killed system processes. This way everything will be back on track and there won’t be any undesired side-effects later.
