Trend Micro patches their antivirus engine

Things cannot get any worse when the antivirus software you are using is crap enough to enable hackers to enter your system.

Something similar happened with the Trend Micro products which had a serious security flaw that can be used by attackers to take down or hijack PCs.

The company has now issued a patch which fixes this vulnerability and all users of their security products are advised to update their applications immediately.

Secunia said in its advisory that the bug could be exploited by getting the scanning engine to process a malformed UPX compressed executable file. It caused a buffer overflow on systems running Trend Micro applications like Client Server, InterScan, OfficeScan, PC-cillin, ScanMail and ServerProtect product lines.

VeriSign iDefense added in its statement that no authentication was needed by the attacker and that a successful attack would allow “complete control of the affected system.”

The company said that the update can be retrieved manually using the instructions posted on the Trend Micro Web site, or automatically through the auto-updater in Trend Micro products. Checkout the Patch here.
