Mozilla.org setting up a unit in China
Mozilla.org is responsible behind popular software applications like Firefox and Thunderbird. The organization is now opening a China office as they aim to take on Microsoft in the world’s second largest internet market.
Mozilla incidentally already has a presence in china through their not-for-profit foundation supporting open-source software projects. However, this new setup would be their first real corporate presence in the country.
Mozilla Chief Operating Officer John Lilly said in a statement on their ambitions: “It’s not our goal to make sure that everyone in the world is using Firefox. My main goal is that people know there’s a choice–that going on the Internet is not just clicking the blue ‘E’.”
The organization aims to educate China’s open-source developers as they aim to localize their products to suit the requirements of Chinese web user.
Market analysts believe that they are in a good position looking at the increasing efforts from the Chinese government to curb piracy in the market.
