The Linux Foundation: Open Source Development Labs merging with Free Standards Group

Linux fans have something to cheer about as two major groups backing the open source operating system are merging to streamline operations.

The two groups would now together represent Linux versus its challengers with one voice.

The two groups are the Open Source Development Labs in Beaverton and the Free Standards Group in San Francisco. They are now forming the combined entity named The Linux Foundation.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the new foundation spoke about this new development: “We will be a vendor neutral organization capable of responding to competitors’ attacks and FUD.”

Some of the big names backing this organization include HP, IBM, Intel, Novell and Oracle. They have in all around 70 vendor sponsors.
