What is up with Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail?

GMail changed many things for me. I started using webmail again. Redirected most of my pop mail ids to GMail for easy accessibility from any computer. And it has also resulted in getting the competition to sit up and notice.

Hotmail

One of the biggest webmail service providers in the world from the big giant corporation Microsoft. They increased the free webmail capacity to 250megs and added a free anti-virus scanner to mails. While the anti-virus is here, I am yet to see my hotmail account updated from laughable 2megs to 250megs.

We still see those big animated ads on the right and top of the web mail client. And to make matter worse, they removed Outlook (and Outlook Express) support for free accounts of Hotmail.

Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo! is another victim of the GMail assault. They began by expanding the mail capacity to 100megs for free users. We had an updated interface with better looking panels. But the ads are still there and look bigger than ever. POP support for free accounts is history.

The latest is that they are increasing the webmail space to 250megs to match hotmail. But it still a quarter of what GMail offers. On the bright side, they are incorporating DomainKeys, which is supposed to decrease the spam problems. I am still on the 100megs account at the moment.

GMail

It is still in beta but getting better. Browser support now covers Opera in their latest preview releases (with some glitches though). Email forwarding, POP support is available for free (at least for now in beta stage). Space is 1Gig, which is complimented with excellent search powered by Google Engine, which beats both Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail search easily. My wish list is IMAP support.

There is no anti-virus support though the mail service denies certain file extensions as attachments. And they have already incorporated Yahoo’s DomainKeys technology.

Generally Speaking

Hotmail is surprisingly giving me fewer spams than ever. Yahoo! Mail is most prone to spam attacks. GMail gives me a simple and fast one click spam assign button, which works perfectly.

A lot depends upon what Google decides to keep in the free version of GMail whenever it is announced. Until then, GMail remains the webmail service of choice for me. Especially when there is no longer a shortage of invites.

I do know one person who had his Hotmail account upgraded, but mine has stubbornly stayed at the 2M mark. And while I don’t need the space, Yahoo! doesn’t seem to have performed any upgrades yet, either. It seems the best thing about Gmail is that they perform their service upgrades without hyping them for months in advance. The other two ought to take note of that fact.

I’ve been using Gmail for quite a while now, and I find that , having a slow computer, the whole thing loads a lot faster than Yahoo! or Hotmail, because of the huge ads.

I’m at 250MB on hotmail. I think there’s a link, perhaps in an email from Hotmail, that you need to “sign up” for the 250 MB.

So Yahoo and Hotmail are supposed to get into a “race” with a product still beta!? I like Google, my home page is Google. Google is a verb for me. But until I see the mailer being made public I think it’s a unfair race and comparisons should be made.

POP support for Yahoo is still available on free accounts. That is the method that use to access my Yahoo e-mail account and never have any problems.

huh… was just wondering why my hotmail account was still at 2 mb when last I checked it about 10 minutes ago, only to check my email to see how I could upgrade now and see it already upgraded. Read my mind… scary… didn’t have to sign up or change country settings either.

POP access is NOT available for the free Yahoo accounts. You have to pay for the premium account — now called Yahoo Mail Plus.

    http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-35.html

“Email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express require the POP Access feature to be enabled for your mailbox. This features is not enabled for Free Yahoo! Mail accounts. “

Well, my hotmail says “keep checking here for upcoming upgrades”. There is a promise, but when this happens, nobody knows. I agree gmail has some glitches, but it is a huge “beta” right know, and we have to take google’s word; if they say this is beta, then it is.

What anyone hardly see is gmail reinvented the rules for emailing. I’m not talking about text ads or relevant keyword searches or privacy concerns. “Searching mail” and “labelling mail”, “no folders”, “no deleting”; these things will set the rules.

I have various hotmail accounts, and all are now at the 250MB mark.. I believe MS upgraded the accounts in chronological order.. my oldest account (9 years old now.. from way back before MS bought hotmail) was upgraded over 2 months ago.. the irony is that I’m getting system mail from MSN saying my accounts will be upgraded soon

Okay, so i’ve got my own domain mail and gmail, and love gmail. So i want to forward all my hotmail stuff over from my free hotmail account, and found that i am unable to do so, unless i am majorly blind….From some of the help files ive read in the past twenty minutes, it looks like i have to buy upgraded features just to get away from hotmail. Can anyone provide suggestions, or should i start screaming at hotmail?

I used to be a great fan of Yahoo mail. Had a hard time getting away from them, even though I liked GMail better. Then they increased the web space to 100MB and changed the interface. At the same time they removed one of their BEST FEATURES, namely the option to view/edit HTML in Composing. I wrote to them and asked why. They said it was in order to provide a more streamline interface…yada yada… What harm could that little box ‘View HTML’ do?! I dunno, but I left and will stay with GMail…

I used to use hotmail as my primary email account for years until Gmail came about that “forced” yahoo to upgrade their storage to 100MB (yes, now 250MB). The one feature that I really LIKED in hotmail was the feature in the settings to disable the “carets” (i.e. “>”) from front of each line when replying. Yahoo and Gmail use “carets” when replying, although in Gmail if you forward the “carets” are not present.

My wish list feature in Yahoo and Gmail is to be able to get rid of the “caret” feature. BTW, my primary email account is Yahoo still. I am debating if Gmail is worthwhile with them keeping my emails forever even after I delete them and then after a period of time giving the emails to whoever asks for it.

    Hello all:

I had been using Yahoo and Hotmail accounts (primarily Yahoo) for all my email needs. I think Yahoo was the best email service until Gmail arrived and changed the way we look at email. Gmail is the best by far. But the only thing I would like to have in Gmail is to write email using HTML interface, different fonts etc. Further, if you forward an email received in HTML through Gmail, all the links are lost. This is something I would like changed. I’ve even written to the Gmail team for the same. Does anyone of you know if that’s going to happen soon, if ever?

Gmail is still in it’s Beta stage and they could add HTML support later on. Gmail automatically disables links in HTML messages you receive as to protect you from viruses, but there’s a link at the top of the message (Display external images) which you can click on to enable them.

I still cant believe my account got randomly closed!! I had so many things being sent to that address. I HATE YOU HOTMAIL.

Here is advice to hotmail users, LIVE IN THE FUTURE AND USE GMAIL OR ATLEAST YAHOO WHICH IS GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO HOTMAIL.
