Silicon Graphics offering systems with Microsoft Compute Cluster OS

Silicon Graphics (SGI) has said that they are now offering servers powered by Windows CCS (Compute Cluster Server) 2003.

This is expected to help the company expand in the HPC (high-performance computing) market.

They are going to offer this software solution on their Altix XE cluster servers. These server products are powered by the dual-core and quad-core Xeon processors from Intel.

David Parry, senior vice president and product general manager for SGI said that running their servers on the Windows operating system would make them more efficient and seamless with the client computers.

He added: “This will go a long way toward bridging the gap between the desktop running Windows and the data center running on Linux or UNIX.”

These systems would be available in the retail market in March for a list price of $3,500 per server.
