Sun Microsystems launches Looking Glass 3D Desktop for several operating systems

Sun Microsystems has released “Looking Glass” for several operating systems. This application is a java based 3D desktop interface which mimics the features made available by Mac OS X and Windows Vista.

Sun had shown off a prototype of this desktop interface way back in 2003 and an open source project was made available next year.

Users can use this interface on top of Windows OS, Linux and Sun Solaris operating systems.

Sun said that some applications can be run in “2.5D” environment which allows the user to rotate them in 3D space to maximize the available desktop space.

In addition, the interface also has a launch bar functionality similar to the Dock feature in Apple Mac OS X.
