Novell Linux Desktop 9 coming this weekend

Enterprise customers have something to cheer about this weekend. One of the biggest Linux supporting corporations Novell is releasing their Novell Linux Desktop 9 based on SuSe Linux later this week for enterprise customers.

The good thing about this move from Novell is that they are not being ambitious and claiming that their version is good enough to replace Windows OS at this moment. Instead, they are targeting places where open-source desktop can be a sensible, cost-effective alternative choice.

Novell think their desktop Linux makes excellent alternative to more expensive Windows OS at places like call center operators, service counter personnel, information kiosks. These computers have a limited functionality to perform and Linux installations can be fine-tuned for better and cheaper alternative.

According to Novell, the system requirement for NLD (Novell Linux Desktop) is very basic. It would run with ease on at least 266MHz with 256MB of RAM, 800MB of disk space and 800-by-600 or higher display resolution and comes with Linux 2.6 kernel and offers users a choice of the KDE 3.3 and GNOME 2.6 desktops. It will be available for purchase through Novell channel partners for a suggested price of $50 per system.

Novell has been very active in the Linux market and their free distribution of commercial grade software (Suse Linux 9.1 Pro etc.) on DVDs was very much appreciated in the User Community.
