Google Gmail Japan opens to anyone interested in opening an account
Search engine giant Google has announced that Japanese users are now free to open up a new account on their Gmail webmail service in the country.
With this, Japan becomes the third market where Google has opened up their Gmail service for invite-less registrations.
Australia and New Zealand are the other two countries where Gmail is open for public registrations. Users in other markets require an invite from existing users to create a new account.
Angela Lee, Tokyo-based product manager at Google spoke on this new development: “We want as many people to have access to our service. The change has had quite a significant impact in Australia and New Zealand.â€

Thats just great. Well it would be except you need a mobile phone to create a gmail account in Japan. (And the US) making it much easier for people (and often more attractive) to use free services like yahoo and hotmail.
