RealNetworks to support Windows Media on Linux platform
RealNetworks has said in a statement that they would soon be releasing an open source media player for the Linux platform, which would be capable of playing Windows Media format files.
The company is collaborating with Novell and this announcement was made at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco. Novell added that they would be adding this application in their SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 in the fourth quarter.
Until then, users of Linux operating system have to install closed-source modules to get the capability of running Windows Media Video (WMV) and Windows Media Audio (WMA) content on their machines.
Real would be releasing this new tool as part of the Helix Community project it launched to bring RealNetworks technology to Linux.
However, as expected this player won’t be able to support digital rights management available with Windows.

What’s the big deal? RealPlayer already plays WMP files types.
I have used Real for everything except ripping. This includes Public Radio web streams, Live365, Shoutcast, and mp3’s.
