French Ministry of Defense claims OpenOffice insecure

Researchers at the French Ministry of Defense have claimed that the developers of the popular open source office suit OpenOffice have failed to provide enough security to its users.

They claim that the users of this suite are as susceptible to virus attacks as the users of MS Office suite are.

The researchers wrote in their paper: “The general security of OpenOffice is insufficient. This suite is up to now still vulnerable to many potential malware attacks.” The paper has been named “In-depth analysis of the viral threats with OpenOffice.org documents.”

They also went on to describe four proof-of-concept viruses that illustrate how maliciously encoded macros and templates could be created to compromise systems running the open-source software.
