Nokia 770 would soon be able to act like a phone

Nokia is the world’s largest maker of mobile phones in the world. So, when the company announced their Nokia 770 product, a lot of people were surprised to see that this Internet tablet device had no telephony capabilities.

The company is however making amends now. They are releasing a software update for the current generation owners of this device and it would somehow work as a communicating device.

The Nokia 770 is basically an 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connected Linux computer. Nokia designed it to be a portable internet-browsing machine. And the latest update to the operating system running on this device comes with support for voice over IP and the SIP protocol.

As a result, users of this device can use it as a VoIP phone whenever they land at Wi-Fi hot spots.

The OS on this tablet now comes loaded with the Google Talk application, which has both instant messaging and VoIP capabilities. And in a short time, a client for the Gizmo Project phone, by SIPPhone, will be available shortly to make calls to regular phones possible using the Nokia 770.
