Microsoft working on fixing the MS Excel security glitch

Software giants Microsoft has already confirmed that a major security flaw exists in its MS Excel application and now they are working on releasing a patch to fix the problem.

The bug is related to how the application manages the system’s memory. The company has offered users a handful of workarounds to mitigate their risk. Microsoft has released a security advisory with these workarounds.

The flaw in MS Excel application can be used to run unauthorized software on the victim’s machine. However, for the flaw to work, victim must visit a malicious Web site or to open an infected Excel attachment.

Microsoft’s advisory on this bug confirms that the bug affects Excel 2000, Excel 2002, and Excel 2003 versions. The company is due to release an updated version of MS Office suite early next year.
