AOL is testing improved web mail service

AOL made news for all the wrong reasons recently when users of their paid mail services discovered that the company was inserting advertisements in their mails. The company has now testing an enhanced Webmail service for its subscribers and instant messaging users.

This new test started late last week and adds on an improved search tool for finding information stored in e-mail messages. Searching capabilities on webmail has become an important aspect for web mail operators after Google launched their Gmail service with excellent searching capabilities.

AOL is also testing integration of AOL Pictures photo management service with their webmail service. This integration helps the user by enabling them to include images directly from their photo galleries in the mail messages.

This is an interesting feature and can result in Yahoo! integrating Flickr with Yahoo! Webmail. That would be fantastic for the users of these two services.

Users would also be able to save images received in mails on AOL to add them to their photo galleries on the same service. Overall, an interesting integration of services, which brings enhanced value for their customers.

However, advertising in mails of paid customers? Not a good idea.
